Places near Malé

Everything here is within reach of the capital — a ferry, a bridge or a speedboat away. Each one is paired with the excursion that goes there.

Dense city blocks and harbour of Malé

Malé

The capital, all of it, on two square kilometres

One of the most densely populated cities in the world, packed onto an island you can walk across in twenty minutes. Mosques, markets, a working harbour and a grid of narrow streets.

What makes it interesting

  • The whole city is walkable — the historic mosque district, the markets and the harbour are minutes apart.
  • Coral-stone architecture from the sultanate sits beside apartment blocks and shopfronts.
  • The fish market shows the tuna economy that the country still runs on.

Best things to do

  • Walk the mosque district and Republic Square
  • Visit the fish market in the late afternoon
  • Watch the boats along the north waterfront
  • Swim at Rasfannu in the evening
  • Half a day on foot
  • The starting point for every Jazeera excursion.

A quiet sandy lane on Vilimalé island

Vilimalé

Malé without the traffic

A separate island a short ferry ride west of the capital, and the quietest place in Greater Malé. Almost no cars, sandy lanes, a public beach and views back to the city skyline.

What makes it interesting

  • Bicycles and walking instead of traffic.
  • A public beach and reef, with local conservation efforts around them.
  • The clearest view of the Malé skyline from across the water.

Best things to do

  • Walk or cycle the residential lanes
  • Spend time at the public beach
  • Look across at Malé from the shore
  • 1–2 hours
  • Reached by public ferry from Malé.

Beachfront promenade in Hulhumalé

Hulhumalé, Phase 1 and 2

A city built on reclaimed reef

An island raised out of the lagoon to take the pressure off Malé. Phase 1 is settled and green, with a long beach and planned neighbourhoods; Phase 2 is newer, taller and still filling in.

What makes it interesting

  • A city designed from nothing, and a direct answer to rising sea levels and overcrowding.
  • A long public beach and seaside promenade in Phase 1.
  • The contrast between finished Phase 1 streets and the high-rise construction of Phase 2.

Best things to do

  • Walk the Phase 1 beachfront and promenade
  • See the Central Park and mosque areas
  • Compare Phase 1 and Phase 2 development
  • 2–3 hours
  • Reached from Malé by road, across the bridge.

Beach and palm trees on Maafushi island

Maafushi

The local island that opened the Maldives up

A populated island in South Malé Atoll and the best-known guesthouse island in the country. It has shops, cafés, a working village and a designated Bikini Beach where swimwear is allowed.

What makes it interesting

  • Island life and beach time in the same place.
  • A designated Bikini Beach, separate from the local beaches.
  • A base for reef, sandbank and nurse-shark trips in the surrounding waters.

Best things to do

  • Swim at Bikini Beach
  • Walk the village streets and shops
  • Snorkel the reefs nearby
  • Included as part of a half-day trip
  • Visited by speedboat from Malé on the Shark Tank and Sandbank excursion.

Sandbanks and reefs

The places with no address

Strips of white sand that appear and disappear with the tide, and the coral reefs around them. They are not fixed destinations — which one you visit depends on the tide, the swell and the day.

What makes it interesting

  • A sandbank is open ocean in every direction, with nothing on it at all.
  • Reef life around the Malé atolls includes turtles, rays and reef sharks.
  • Because the spots change, no two trips are identical.

Best things to do

  • Snorkelling
  • Swimming from a sandbank
  • Photography in open water
  • Part of a half-day or sunset trip
  • The exact sandbank and reef used is chosen on the day, according to sea conditions.
